Legendary Record Producer – STEVE LILLYWHITE Brings Road Recovery Good Luck for Friday the 13th!

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2009::

New York, NY: MajorWho Media (www.majorwho.com) graciously hosted Grammy Award Winning Record Producer Steve Lillywhite for his second Road Recovery Master Class!

For more than ninety minutes, Steve Lillywhite, the man behind so many historical rock albums, ‘produced, mixed and mastered’ a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Road Recovery’s young adult program participants and staff.

Steve Lillywhite makes a positive connection with Road Recovery youth!

Lillywhite’s view on life is interchangeable with how he produces bands as he proclaimed "Production should be transparent so the band can stand out" & "I hope I get a different sound each time." Lillywhite is a man whose life has experienced much joy and pain. His experiences inside and out of the recording studio have shaped a man who is humble and aware of his shortcomings, yet he remains confident in what he knows best - himself and the willingness to push himself beyond what feels comfortable.

Steve Lillywhite captivates Road Recovery youth & staff sharing his personal and professional life experiences

Steve Lillywhite started his career in the recording studio in 1972 at the bottom rung of the ladder as a tape operator at Phonogram's Marble Arch studio in England. In effect, a tape operator was a "tea boy"-- someone who ran to get tea and other necessities and indulgences for the musicians and engineers. Soon enough, however, he became an engineer himself and began producing bands on the side.

Lillywhite has produced some of the most successful albums from such internationally acclaimed artists as U2, the Talking Heads, and the Rolling Stones, and some of the most trend-setting albums by such musical pioneers as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ultravox, the Psychedelic Furs, XTC, the Pogues, World Party, Morrissey, Dave Mathews Band, Phish, Matchbox Twenty, and Ours. In 2006, Lillywhite was awarded producer of the year at the Grammy Awards.

Without missing a beat, Steve Lillywhite turned the tables on the dozen Road Recovery young artists who call themselves Crazy James and invited them into the recording studio control room of Major Who Media. Once in the comfortable setting of the recording studio’s control room, Lillywhite listened to rough mixes of new Crazy James material. After exploring all the elements of the young artists’ work, Lillywhite urged everyone to take chances within themselves and never settle both musically and personally!

Lillywhite offered a story told to him by U2 frontman Bono concerning John Lennon. Sitting in a room surrounded by a bunch of people, Lennon played a new song for everyone and asked someone what part of the song they really liked. This person responded “I like the chorus”. Without thinking, John Lennon responded good, then I’ll take the chorus and make it the verse and write a new chorus”.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2009 :: Metallica’s James Hetfield Gets Quiet with Road Recovery Youth & Makes Generous Financial Donation to Support the Cause!
Metallica front man, James Hetfield graciously invited a group of Road Recovery’s sober young people backstage to share his life experiences in a relaxed setting, while a hundred yards away 18,000 metalheads awaited a pounding by Metallica onstage at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum, on Thursday, January 29th during the band’s Death Magnetic world tour.

For more than an hour, James Hetfield spoke openly about his roller coaster years spent in search of a content life and the hole he couldn’t fill with pot, boose, sex, fast cars, a rock star’s lifestyle, food/sugar, and a negative attitude. Music was always his constant saving grace, a life line, which today is more prolific as a result of choosing sobriety and the wonderful fallout that comes with it.

Hetfield shared how he understands himself more each day and so do others in his life circle, which he attributes as the secret to maintaining his inner balance. The void he tried to fill for so many years has been replaced with wonderful opportunities and experiences that directly impact everyone in his life, including Metallica fans. “It’s all about NOW, being in the moment, that’s my goal!”

James Hetfield explained that his persona on or off stage are all aspects of who he is. For instance, many times while in public, fans approach him expecting the guy on stage to be in their face; instead they are greeted by a man who likes to engage in meaningful conversation. It throws people off…and in many ways creates misunderstandings…his request for steamed fish before a gig is not a rock star’s demand, he’s taking care of his body, giving it what it needs, helping him deliver the best performance he can!

James shared with Road Recovery’s youth how he’s still quick to call himself names when he drops something on the floor, but at least today he’s aware of his shortcomings. Little by little he speaks about chipping away at his ‘negative self talk’. He’s surrounded by real friends, caring band mates, family, and fans that look out for him in the truest sense even when he’s beating himself up!

"Turning that road to ruin into Road Recovery can be a great one having the tools and support. The keys for me have been honesty and awareness. Respecting yourself with honesty will give you and others a clear mission on what is healthy and what is not. When people know your struggles they can help you be aware of your behavior.

Be the rebel and help break the myth of sex, drugs, rock and roll by standing up with your given gift. Stand up without those crutches before they inevitably fail you. Road Recovery, they fight the good fight." - With Much Love and Respect, James ‘papa het’ Hetfield, (Metallica)

"I appreciate James Hetfield’s warmth and honesty. He inspired me to continue to have the courage to become myself even if that means ordering steamed fish!"– Ryan S. (Road Recovery youth)

James Hetfield’s Road Recovery Master Class would not have been possible without the committed support of: Bright Antenna (Shine, Scott Shumaker & Sep), Metallica & James Hetfield’s team (Joni Soekotjo, Vickie Strate, & Jeff Yeager)

The Road Recovery Foundation is humbly grateful to James Hetfield for his generous financial support, especially in these times of economic uncertainty.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2009 :: Deja Vu for Jeff Buckley’s Mom, Drummer & Road Recovery.

New York, NY – 14 years later, Major Who Media’s(www.majorwho.com) recording studios, once the rehearsal space for the late artist Jeff Buckley, became the backdrop for Buckley’s Mother Mary Guibert and Buckley band drummer Matt Johnson to participate in Road Recovery’s Master Class Series.

January 2009 kicked off in a most serial way, uniting Road Recovery’s Jack Bookbinder of Jeff Buckley management team and Gene Bowen, Buckley’s tour manager, with Mary Guibert (Jeff Buckley Music - www.jeffbuckley.com) and Jeff’s band mate Matt Johnson (www.drumsmattjohnson.com) inside the late artist’s rehearsal space now the home of Major Who Media.

In 1995, James Walsh of Major Who Media owned a recording studio that was originally located next door to the Jeff Buckley band rehearsal cave. As neighbors occupying a Dungeness basement in a residential NYC apartment building, a friendship developed between Buckley, Bowen and Walsh. After Jeff Buckley’s accidental drowning in 1997, Gene Bowen knocked on Major Who Media’s door and offered Walsh Buckley’s old space...the rest is history…

(Road Recovery) reminisce about days ago…

During the two Master Class Sessions Matt Johnson and Mary Guibert wove an intimate conversation with a small group of Road Recovery teens and young adults illuminating the twists and turns of their life and career story. Independently, Guibert and Johnson described in great detail their daily quest toward ever finding meaning, understanding and purpose in what drove them; their inner passion toward a life with meaning.

Even in the wake of great tragedy and loss, Guibert summoned everyone to ‘be their own hero’ by being accountable to themselves through evolving an honest relationship within and the outside world intersecting them.

At the conclusion of each Master Class session with Matt Johnson and Mary Guibert, an unending musical exchange erupted in true Buckley style!

"I recommend this experience for people on both sides. I got to meet new people, play music, and talk with others about life…The gift of life!!! Road Recovery is about sharing. I love this organization." – Matt Johnson, drummer

"I have so much respect for these young people. They are constantly dealing with daily challenges to their sobriety with so much courage and integrity. I am in awe of them." – Mary Guibert (Jeff Buckley Music)
